Traveling can make staying healthy and in shape very challenging. The combination of jet lag, limited gym access, and the precious time that you would rather spend exploring, can make neglecting your workouts quite easy. Traveling a majority of the year, I’ve realized, I can’t just be on “vacation mode” every time I’m away from home. Which is why I always pack super light workout equipment, like resistance bands and a jump rope. Even in the limited space of a hotel room or vacation rental, you can always fit in a 30-minute sweat sess.
Another great way to get a workout in, if available in your destination, is signing up for workout classes. Classes are a god-sent when it comes to workout motivation because all you have to do is show up, and the trainer will essentially force you to work. When this isn’t an option, online classes are always another option. My current favorite is Melissa Wood Health’s yoga and pilates series.
Though, for all those times it’s just you in your hotel room, here is my go-to workout routine that helps to maintain and tone muscle, while also getting your heart rate pumping. I love to combine both resistance training using lightweight resistance bands, jump rope cardio, and bodyweight workouts.
Do keep in mind though that staying fit while traveling is not just about working out, and when it really comes down to it, your diet is just as, if not even more, important.

Pro Tip –
If you’re looking to increase difficulty or challenge your cardiovascular endurance, try adding more time to the jump rope intervals. When I really want to sweat it out, I opt for a 5-minute jump rope warmup and 5-minutes jump rope in between each circuit, totaling 15 minutes of heart pumping cardio.
